October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Kathleen Bauer and Carol Sherman from the Sandhills Crisis Intervention Program joined Josh to discuss the awareness month, domestic violence in general, what services SCIP provides and more.

In the past 6 months, SCIP has had about 311 people walk through their doors for the first time.  They've had repeat contact with 1,020 people.  The agency services 6 counties - Deuel, Keith, Garden, Arthur, Grant and Perkins.  Some people need help getting out of a violent situation, while others may need other forms of help - food assistance, shelter assistance, counseling, financial assistance, transportation assistance, and more.

Purple ribbons are being placed on light poles all over Ogallala to help raise awareness of domestic violence.

SCIP has challenged the public to reach a goal of 500 "likes" on their Facebook page.  All Facebook users that "like" their page will be entered to win a prize.  SCIP FACEBOOK PAGE.

The National Geographic Channel is premiering their new season of Drugs, Inc. - an unflinching look at a $350 Billion per year industry.  The series takes a look at different cities in the U.S. and investigates the drug problem by looking at it from multiple angles - dealers, users, abusers, families, law enforcement, judicial system, prisons and jails.

Judge Steven Alm joined us to talk about the new season, and about the drug problem in general.

Judge Alm is the creator of the Hawaii's Opportunity Probation with Enforcement program, or HOPE Probation. This successful program, the first of its kind in the nation, imposes proportionate jail time swiftly and with certainty as a sanction for a positive drug test or other probation violations. An independent study of offenders in HOPE - the majority of whom are felony drug offenders at high risk of recidivism - showed that HOPE probationers did far better than members of a control group in regular probation.

Judge Alm also presides over the First Circuit’s Adult Drug Court program, an assignment he assumed in March 2011.

Judge Alm supervises more than 2,000 felony probationers in HOPE and 150 in the Drug Court program.

He is co-chair of the Inter-agency Council on Intermediate Sanctions.

He was named the 2010 Jurist of the Year by Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald.

Prior to his judicial appointment, Judge Alm served as the United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii from 1994 until 2001. From 1985 to 1994, Judge Alm served as Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the City and County of Honolulu. During that time, he served as a Felony Team Supervisor and as Director of the District and Family Court division and personally handled complex homicide cases.

Judge Alm received his law degree from the University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law and his Master's degree in Education from the University of Oregon.
