Michelle and Dan Benavidaz, who lost a son in the Iraq war, are walking across the country to raise awareness and funds for American Military Family. An amazing story. We also conduct a candidate interview with Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lustgarten.
Michelle and Dan Benavidaz may have been the "typical" military parents - up until 2008. In 2008, their son, Staff Sergeant Kenneth Mayne, was killed in an IED attack in Iraq. The days and years following the notification were, as Michelle puts it, a blur. Michelle was notified of American Military Family, and utilized their services of family support to get through some of the tough times. Since then, Michelle and Dan have decided to give back, and to honor their son. They chose to embark on a journey across country to raise awareness and funds. The couple left Fort Carson, Colorado, on foot on April 13, 2012, and are WALKING to the Middle East Memorial Wall in Marseilles, Illinois. They plan on arriving at their destination on June 15, 2012. Their hope is to honor their son by completing the journey as planned, and by raising awareness and funds to help veterans and their families deal with the difficult task of coming home, as well as to provide support for family and friends of fallen soldiers.
