North Platte Fire Department Chief Paul Pedersen is retiring after 40 years on the job.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - North Platte Fire Department Chief Paul Pedersen is retiring after 40 years on the job.

North Platte television station KNOP-TV says (http://bit.ly/12ZV5Dv) Pedersen's last day is Monday.

The city's mayor has named assistant fire chief Dennis Thompson as interim fire chief. He'll take over Pedersen's duties immediately after Pedersen's departure.

One of Pedersen's last acts as chief was to revoked burn permits on Friday for North Platte and the 369 square miles around it.

Pedersen says extremely dry conditions make it too easy for controlled burns to rage out of control.
