Obama Administration officials have released a list of federal budget cuts that would affect Nebraska should the so-called sequester go into effect Friday

Obama Administration officials have released a list of federal budget cuts that would affect Nebraska should the so-called sequester go into effect Friday. Senator Johanns questions the cuts. Brent Martin has the story.
Brent Martin;

Senator Johanns expects the sequester cuts to go into effect. He points out the 85 Billion dollars in cuts is a very small piece of the federal budget. . .
Sen. Mike Johanns; "possibly can"
Such as a scheduled 15-Million dollar cut to the Air Force in Nebraska...and an estimate that 4-Thousand civilians working for the Department of Defense will be laid off.
Johanns says if flexibility is given to federal departments, they could lessen the pain of the cuts. . .
Johanns; "next decade"
Johanns says it's not easy, but should be manageable.

Senator Johanns accuses the White House of trying to make a point, rather than manage a budget, by releasing proposed cuts if the so-called sequester takes place Friday.
Johanns says that list is meant to scare people. . .
Johanns; "avoid the cuts"
Johanns suggests that if federal departments were allowed flexibility they could manage the cuts in a much less painful way.

Senator Johanns says handling the so-called sequester shouldn't be as painful as the White House is making it out to be.
The White House has released a list of proposed cuts should compromise not be reached.
We asked Johanns, who served as Secretary of Agriculture, how he would handle the cuts to the USDA if he were still in charge. . .
Johanns; "the job done"
Under the sequester, 85 Billion dollars would be cut from the federal budget.
The White House says Nebraska would suffer a 15-Million dollars cut to the Air Force, with 4-Thousand Nebraskans working for the Defense Department laid off.

Senator Johanns says the federal government should be able to handle a 1-point-2 Trillion dollar cut over the next ten years without drastic cuts to programs and services.
Johanns rejects a White House contention that the so-called sequester would be disastorous for the country. Johanns says President Obama isn't giving federal departments the flexibility needed to manage the cuts. . .
Johanns; "for our future"
The administration says Nebraska will see a 15-Million dollar cut to the Air Force and that 4-Thousand civilians working for the Defense Department would be laid off.
