LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A veterans' group has endorsed Gov. Dave Heineman's plan to eliminate Nebraska's corporate and individual income taxes, but opposition is mounting from business groups.
Heineman, a Republican, announced backing for his plan Wednesday from the Department of Nebraska Veterans of Foreign Wars Council of Administration.
The group's state commander, Dave Beran, says the bill would ease the financial burden on veterans, many of whom live month-to-month on Social Security benefits.
Heineman is pushing two tax measures this session. The Legislature's Revenue Committee has set a Wednesday hearing for the larger proposal, which would eliminate an estimated $2.4 billion in sales tax exemptions to make up the lost income-tax revenue.
Many of the state's largest business groups have said the proposal would hurt their members.
