Companies that are based in Nebraska would have an advantage over those from out-of-state when bidding on state contracts, under a bill that'll go before state lawmakers this year. Matt Kelley reports:
The measure is called the "Buy Nebraska Act," and it's being introduced by Senator Heath Mello of Omaha. Mello says he crafted the bill after hearing from a local data entry firm. It had lost out on a contract with the state Game and Parks Commission by less than $20. The deal went to a firm from out-of-state. He says the legislation is designed to keep jobs in Nebraska. The state's already awarding some two-billion dollars in contracts every year, though it's unclear how much of that goes to out-of-state companies. Mello says 46 other states have measures similar to the "Buy Nebraska" act.
