Investing in Nebraska's parks is good for the state

Investing in Nebraska's parks is good for the state. That according to Director of Nebraska State Game and Parks, Jim Douglas who is pleased that Governor Dave Heineman today outlined a plan to invest $1.7-million for improvements and expansion at Mahoney State Park and Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area.

Funding is included in the Governor's proposed budget for fiscal years 2013 through 2015. Improvements to McConaughy State Recreation Area include improvements to the Lone Eagle and Cedar Vue campgrounds. The money would be used at Mahoney State Park for the construction of new deluxe cabins.

Mahoney State Park generated more than $52-million in retail sales in 2010 and with trip related spending the park's economic impact was nearly $87-million with more than one-million visitors. In 2010 nearly one-million people visited Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area generating more than $44-million in retail sales and with trip related expenditures added the yearly economic impact totaled more than $73-million.

Plans for Mahoney State Park include construction of three lodge style cabins that can be used year round.

The plan also calls for upgrading RV facilities at the Lone Eagle campground. Plans for Mahoney State Park include construction of three lodge style cabins that can be used year round. The plan is to invest $1.7-million for improvements and expansion at those two parks.


Two of Nebraska's largest tourism locations would receive upgrades with funding included in Governor Dave Heineman's proposed 2013 - 2015 budget.
