LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A state senator who tried to pass a bill two years ago that would have armed Nebraska teachers says he's not planning on introducing it again.
The Omaha World Herald reports (http://bit.ly/TLArix) that state Sen. Mark Christensen of Imperial says he won't bring it up again unless there's an outpouring of support for the idea.
Allowing teachers and administrators with state permits to carry concealed weapons in schools generated controversy in 2011. Christensen says Friday's suggestion by the National Rifle Association to place armed security officers in schools seems less divisive.
Nebraska law allows only on-duty police officers assigned to schools to carry a gun. Otherwise, schools are to be gun-free.
