Extension Forester Dennis Adams with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has a few tips for choosing a fresh tree. . .

You can also hit the butt of the tree on the ground to see if any needles fall.
Once you get the tree home, cut a half-inch to an inch off the trunk so the tree can absorb water.


Take a little bit of time while buying that live Christmas tree to insure that it remains fresh throughout the season.
Extension Forester Dennis Adams suggests you brush the branches to discover if needles are flexible. If they feel brittle or fall off, that's an indication the tree is dry.
Once you get it home, Adams says you should cut off a bit of the trunk. . .
