Federal agriculture officials have released 30-Million dollars to help offset agricultural losses due to the drought.

Senator Johanns, a former Secretary of Agriculture, says the action by the USDA won't cover the assistance that would be provided in a new Farm Bill. Johanns says that when Congress approved the current Farm Bill it lowered its cost by not funding the final year of a number of agricultural disaster programs.

Senator Mike Johanns:

The House, though, hasn't acted. The House did approve a disaster assistance package, but the Senate didn't take that up before leaving on its August recess.
