Organizers of a petition drive say they're close to forcing a grand jury review of the 2008 death of a 2-year-old girl in the Nebraska Panhandle.
GERING, Neb. (AP) - Petition organizers say they have already collected more than 800 signatures to force a review of Juliette Guerts' death.
They must have the signatures of 974 registered voters to force a grand jury. Supporters told KNEB radio they plan to gather 1,500 to be sure.
Guerts died in her Gering home in July 2008. The child's mother, Charyse, her boyfriend and another man were home when the Charyse Guerts said she found the girl dead in her crib.
An autopsy showed the girl died because of trauma, so police investigated her death as a homicide. But no arrests have been made.
