Nebraska Wesleyan College students are re-examining the unsolved killing of a North Platte teen found dead in 1996.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - Katie Sheets, a graduate student from North Platte, says an assignment for forensic science class was to review a cold case. So, she told the North Platte Telegraph (http://bit.ly/JWKUWu ), she turned to the disappearance of Julie Derrick.

Derrick was 19 when she went missing in October 1995. Two swimmers found her body weighted down in a sandpit west of Hershey in July 1996.

Sheets has been reviewing case files and evidence. She says the state now of the some of the samples is questionable and others were improperly handled.

Lincoln County chief sheriff's deputy Roland Kramer says that based on the students' work, authorities will conduct more interviews in the case.
