President Barack Obama announced Tuesday evening that the role U.S. military is serving in Afghanistan will soon end and in its place a partnership to support their efforts.

Tom Goutierre is the director of Afghan Studies at the University of Nebraska - Omaha and he is praising the agreement.

"It helps to underscore the greatest proportion of them hope for is continued American assistance an interest in their efforts to rebuild those institutions that are essential."

Goutierre says it is important that the United States continues the commitment to Afghanistan once U.S. soldiers are gone.

"I think it is a good development for the U.S., its interest in that part of the world and it is certainly is important and good for Afghanistan."

Goutierre says the majority of Afghans support continued U.S. assistance.
