A new email scam is making the rounds to the inboxes of many people. It attempts to lure in anyone who may've recently mailed a package or who's waiting for one.
Steve Stebbins, with the U-S Postal Inspection Service, says the emails look like they're from the post office, but they're not.
"Typically, (the emails say) they have parcels ready or they're about to be charged for online postage or they owe some extra money on their parcels that they have mailed," Stebbins says. "In these bogus emails, there's links and, of course, that's where the scammers get you."
If you click on those links or attachments, Stebbins says a malicious virus can be downloaded to your computer that can steal personal information and help the scammer commit identity theft.
Stebbins says, "Right now, our investigators, our federal agents with the Postal Inspection Service are working with the IT folks with the Post Service in an attempt to track down the source of these scammers."
Stebbins says if you receive a questionable e-mail, check with the Postal Service before clicking on anything to make sure it's authentic.
